Objective: Upon
completion of the class Ss will be able to write a complaint letter about
inappropriate TV programs, soap operas, reality shows etc., that are being
shown during the evening hours.
1. Introduce the topic:
·
Ask Ss what type of TV programs they watch early
at night.
·
Show Ss some controversial images from up to
date TV programs that are being broadcasted early in the evening.
·
Split the class into groups and handout
newspaper or magazine articles, related on how TV programs influence negatively
children’s behavior.
2.
Read a sample of a complaint letter to the class
and have a discussion about it.
3.
Brainstorming: Draw three circles on the board,
and write two controversial TV programs shown early in the evening one for each
circle, for example: “el patron del mal” (Caracol) and “Protagonistas de
novela” (RCN), on the third circle write the word (Neutral) for those Ss who
don’t watch either one. Now brainstorm each category with the Ss thoughts
4.
Fast write: Have Ss take ideas from the
brainstorm and write four sentences related to what they think about
inappropriate programs shown in the evening, and then have Ss in pairs exchange,
select and reject ideas.
5.
Focus on useful models: Have Ss read two
complaint letter samples. Then have them underline key phrases from each
letter. Ask Ss which letter do they think is the appropriate one and why, then
elicit from Ss what the structure of a complaint letter should be. After this
step, clarify the special rules for writing a complaint letter.
6.
Prepare drafts: Have Ss write a draft
individually, then in pairs have them peer correct each other (if language is correct, vocabulary, punctuation,
coherent, etc)
7.
For homework: Have Ss write their final edited
letter.
